چکیده

background alkylphenol polyethoxylates (apneos) and their metabolites disposal from sewage treatment plants (stp) are of particular concern due to their persistence, toxicity to aquatic organisms, and a potential endocrine disruptor. in this work, we focused on the determination of nonylphenol (np) and nonylphenol polyethoxylate (npneos) in water were collected from karun river. material and methods in this study, sample collections for karun river water were carried out on rainy and dry seasons from 10 hydrometric stations according to standard methods. the water samples were prepared using solid phase extraction procedure and analyzed by hplc–fld.. results according to this study, np and npneos concentrations in karun river water ranged from 0.118–1.369 μg/l and 0.130–0.365 μg/l, respectively. this study showed that the np concentration in water samples of karun river was higher than the other alkyphenolic metabolites. the data showed significant difference between mean concentrations of these compounds in the upstream and downstream stations of ahwaz megacity (p–value <0.05).

Endocrine Disrupting Contaminants—Beyond the Dogma

Descriptions of endocrine disruption have largely been associated with wildlife and driven by observations documenting estrogenic, androgenic, antiandrogenic, and antithyroid actions. These actions, in response to exposure to ecologically relevant concentrations of various environmental contaminants, have now been established in numerous vertebrate species. However, many potential mechanisms an...

Are Endocrine Disrupting Compounds a Health Risk in Drinking Water?

There has been a great deal of international discussion on the nature and relevance of endocrine disrupting compounds in the environment. Changes in reproductive organs of fish and mollusks have been demonstrated in rivers downstream of sewage discharges in Europe and in North America, which have been attributed to estrogenic compounds in the effluent. The anatomical and physiological changes i...

The multigenerational effects of water contamination and endocrine disrupting chemicals on the fitness of Drosophila melanogaster

Water pollution due to human activities produces sedimentation, excessive nutrients, and toxic chemicals, and this, in turn, has an effect on the normal endocrine functioning of living beings. Overall, water pollution may affect some components of the fitness of organisms (e.g., developmental time and fertility). Some toxic compounds found in polluted waters are known as endocrine disruptors (E...

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds – Problems and Challenges

In this chapter, information about some of the estrogenic compounds and their environmental fate and biological influence can be found. Special attention is paid to the review of the analytical approaches used at the stages of detection and determi‐ nation of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) in the environmental samples. Also, a brief characterization of both cellular and non-cellular bioa...

Fungal Laccases Degradation of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds

Over the past decades, water pollution by trace organic compounds (ng/L) has become one of the key environmental issues in developed countries. This is the case of the emerging contaminants called endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). EDCs are a new class of environmental pollutants able to mimic or antagonize the effects of endogenous hormones, and are recently drawing scientific and public a...

Structural basis for PPARγ transactivation by endocrine-disrupting organotin compounds

Organotin compounds such as triphenyltin (TPT) and tributyltin (TBT) act as endocrine disruptors through the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) signaling pathway. We recently found that TPT is a particularly strong agonist of PPARγ. To elucidate the mechanism underlying organotin-dependent PPARγ activation, we here analyzed the interactions of PPARγ ligand-binding domain (LBD)...
